In Memoriam: Bishop John Tan (Founding Principal of SAJC)
The St Andrew’s Junior College community mourns the passing of our founding Principal, Bishop John Tan Teng Wai, who returned to the Lord on 3 April.
As the pioneer leader appointed to start the College in 1978, Bishop Tan oversaw the admission of our first 600 students at the Malan Road campus. His leadership was defined by a remarkable resilience; despite starting in premises that were not yet fully completed, he and his staff ensured that the educational mission moved forward without pause.
Under his guidance, the College established a strong reputation for academic excellence in the Commerce Faculty and a vibrant culture in sports and track and field. Bishop Tan was a man of diverse passions: a leader who championed student athletes and a musician who was well known for performing on his saxophone within the college.
Above all, he was a man of deep faith who emphasised character. He frequently shared Psalm 1 with his students, encouraging them to be like trees planted by streams of water, rooted in what is right and honourable. We are deeply thankful for the dedication and vision Bishop Tan provided during those foundational years.
Our deepest condolences to his family and the many lives he touched. Rest in peace, Bishop Tan. Up and On!
